- Input Output Group (IOG) alerted Cardano community members to steer clear of its official YouTube channel following a fraudulent crypto giveaway broadcast.
- The scam leveraged a fraudulent video featuring Charles Hoskinson alongside a QR code designed to guide viewers into a deceptive payment procedure.
Cardano community members received alerts advising them to steer clear of Input Output Group’s (IOG) YouTube account after hackers seemingly took control of the platform to stream a fraudulent cryptocurrency giveaway featuring Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson.
On Sept. 18, IOG released an advisory urging individuals not to engage with the channel until further notice. The organization instructed the public to refrain from clicking any links, transferring funds, or disclosing sensitive personal details via materials posted on the page.
Via an X (formerly Twitter) statement, Hoskinson confirmed that the “IOG YouTube apparently has been compromised. Do not trust any videos or click on any links on it.” He further noted that staff members were collaborating with YouTube to delete the unauthorized media and restore account security.
Reports indicate the hijacked channel broadcasted a simulated Project Catalyst town hall utilizing what appeared to be an artificial intelligence-altered video of Hoskinson. The transmission advertised a digital asset giveaway promising to double participants’ funds. A visible QR code on the screen directed audiences toward a malicious payment mechanism. Neither official Cardano nor IOG entities sanctioned this promotion.
This event mirrors a deceptive strategy that Cardano participants have faced warnings over for several years. Official security protocols issued by Cardano explicitly advise against fraudulent livestreams and presentations involving Hoskinson that claim they will send back more ADA than contributed. These guidelines emphasize that authentic giveaways never demand an initial cryptocurrency deposit from users.
Cardano Price Moves Higher as Scam Hits IOG Channel
This security breach unfolds concurrently with notable upward momentum for ADA within the wider digital asset market. Market figures indicate that Cardano traded near $0.2164 on Sept. 18, following a close of approximately $0.2025 the day prior on Sept. 17. Statistics from Investing.com reflected a daily gain exceeding 9% for ADA, reaching an intraday peak of about $0.2173.
Based on historical metrics from CoinGecko, ADA held a market capitalization close to $8.1 billion, while daily trading volume surpassed $558 million. Prior to its subsequent recovery sessions, ADA finished trading at $0.1954 on Sept. 15.
Available reports currently show no indication that the underlying Cardano blockchain suffered any breach. The event is strictly limited to the apparent hijacking of IOG’s YouTube account and the unauthorized content distributed through it. Furthermore, IOG has not publicly detailed the method used to breach the channel, whether additional systems experienced compromises, or if any individuals successfully lost funds to the fraudsters.
For individuals who viewed the transmission, the primary danger stems from engaging with the scam rather than merely viewing the footage. Cardano security guidelines stress that digital asset transfers directed to deceptive wallets typically cannot be undone, highlighting requests to “send ADA first” as a major red flag.
